Those Who Dare is a tabletop role-playing game that spans the entire breadth of human history, from the dawn of civilization to the far reaches of space. Whether you’re a stone age hunter tracking mammoth across frozen tundra, a Renaissance explorer charting unknown seas, or a Diamond Age hacker infiltrating corporate networks, TWD provides the foundation for epic storytelling across any era—or even across multiple eras simultaneously.
You and your community must navigate the challenges of your chosen age while forging bonds that transcend time itself. Will your characters rise to greatness through advancement and glory? How will they face the inevitable endings that await all who dare to dream? Every character’s story matters, and every ending becomes the foundation for new stories—whether you’re playing as the descendants of your fallen heroes or the rescue team sent after the original crew’s catastrophic failure.
In this comprehensive core rulebook, you’ll find:
- A universal system spanning 12 distinct ages across four eras: Ancient (Stone, Bronze, Classical), Iron (Middle Ages, Renaissance, Age of Sail), Modern (Industrial, Progressive, Computer), and Futuristic (Diamond, Space, Zenith)—mix and match to create alternate histories where Roman legions face modern tanks or space marines discover medieval kingdoms.
- Character creation using four core aptitudes: Dangerous (combat prowess), Fitness (physical capability), Cognition (intellectual capacity), and Psyche (social acumen).
- A streamlined d6 dice pool system that emphasizes narrative flow over complex calculations—successes drive the story forward while partial successes keep momentum alive.
- Roguelike character progression where meaningful character endings reward the entire community, unlocking new abilities, higher starting attributes, and unique legacy items for future generations of heroes. Play as the descendants of your previous characters, inheriting their legacy items and accumulated wisdom. When disaster strikes and heroes fall, roll up the rescue team—the B-squad specialists, the grieving relatives, or the rival organization sent to clean up the mess.
- Three distinct gameplay phases: fast-paced Action Scenes using simultaneous card-driven turns, exploratory Freeplay for investigation and roleplay, and restorative Downtime for character development and community building.
- Community-centered gameplay where the group’s shared resources, relationships, and reputation evolve alongside individual character arcs—your community grows stronger with each character’s sacrifice, creating an ever-ascending spiral of capability and legend.
- Comprehensive equipment and technology guides for each historical age, from stone tools to quantum computers to technologies indistinguishable from magic.
- The “Rise of the Revolution” introductory module set during Washington’s crossing of the Delaware, complete with historical context and ready-to-play scenarios.
- Pure Historical and Alternate History stories are all possible. Create campaigns where Bronze Age warriors discover crashed spaceships, Victorian investigators unravel a timetravel conspiracy, or a group of modern day friends are cast back into the medieval era.

Those Who Dare is very interesting game with a robust character creation system that is satisfying to engage with, while allowing for a very rules light in game experience. The simultaneous action resolution allows for a much faster paced action experience, with the ability to save successes for future checks creating an engaging cycle of momentum and tension.
Would highly recommend for anyone interested in telling a pulpy action story over a variety of historical or science fictions settings.

From the minute I heard about Those Who Dare I was enthralled with the possibilities of what I could create with this type of game, the core Daring system is solid when comparing it to other systems in role playing, and it gives you the ability to run a game in our world across so many pivotal times in our history.
Building characters was super straight forward, and I love the classless system so every character I build can be a little different.
I cannot recommend this game enough to history buffs who want a new way to play through, or even teach others about historical events. Also the ease to make alternate timeline adventures, games that span centuries, also my favourite idea TIME COPS where you travel through history making sure no one messes with the timeline!
This game is going to be at my table for so many years
